A deep purple form of the “Broad Leaf Plantain” coming completely true from seed with large shiny purple leaves producing a most impressive rosette from which arise long ,thin, thrusting-upwards, poker-like seed heads. This is a superb, showy, hardy perennial plant where foliage and form are required.
GROW: For best results, sow immediately onto a good soil-based compost. Cover the seeds with fine grit or compost to approximately their own depth. They can be sown at any time, and germination can sometimes be quicker if kept at 15 to 20 degrees C. You can grow in punnets and transplant.
HARVEST: Gather plantain for food in early spring when the leaves are still tender. Plantain leaves can be harvested for medicine anytime in spring through early Autumn if they look vibrant. Pinch or cut leaves at the base. Harvest seed heads as they dry.
USE: Dry or fresh leaves as medicine, both internally and externally. Can be used sparingly as vegetable. Seeds can be harvested and used as grain.
